I had lost a cell. It had expanded upwards! Here are some more pictures after I had removed it from the car.
This is how the battery was. I didn't pull the cells out and I'm not able to. They are very tight! There must be a hundred cells in these.
Here is a close up of one of the cells that ripped open. They are paper thin!

Sadly no. It wasn't the cell with the least capacity. It was, however, the cell that had self discharged the worst of all while the car sat for a year.
Luckily it didn't damage the hood.
Just watched "Who killed the Electric Car" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489037/ ). I never heard of the EV1 from GM before here in Europe - unbelievable what happened to this beauty. This movie and your blog made me change my mind: I want to become independent of the oil industry when it comes to mobility.
Already your entry about the solar panels on the roof changed my mind from "just install 2-3 panels for hot water" to "why not fill the rest of our roof with photovoltaic panels?". According to the latest information I gathered it's even interesting nowadays if you don't live in sunny California and have to live with fog and cloudy skies in winter.
Now I have to decide whether it's our family Volvo V50, my beloved s2k or if I should purchase a used small car for this. I'll have to check with a colleague who does EV conversions here in Switzerland (unfortunately he's on a around-the-world-trip with his solar e-bike at the moment :)
BTW: The most funny comment in the movie (besides the ones from GWB) : "People fear that they have to use small cars and live in cold houses - like in Europe".
I had never heard of the EV1 either until watching that video. I started my conversion without knowing it had even existed. I figured it was worth spreading the word.
Glad you enjoyed it and the blog. I figure my money is going to go somewhere, I'd rather it be in a project car like this that I enjoy working on.
I'm glad you were able to resolve the problems related to the battery of your electric car. Electric vehicles are now our future. These are vehicles that do not pollute and do not require continuous maintenance. Being able to convert a common mean in an electric car is a fantastic opportunity, because it saves on the cost of buying an electric car, that unfortunately is still excessive. Congratulations for the blog!
